YeoMama Club:
Ying Shuen

Meet Ying Shuen—longtime YeoMama Batik fan, foodie at heart, and firm believer that every calorie must be worth it!

Juggling a full-time job in Emergency Planning with part-time Project Management studies, she’s no stranger to challenges. But no matter how packed her schedule gets, she always makes time for what brings her joy—good food, meaningful connections, and clothes that feel like they were made just for her.

Recently, we had the pleasure of inviting Ying Shuen and her mum down to our studio for a fun shoot, and of course, we couldn’t pass up the chance to chat. Read on for her journey with YeoMama Batik, their funniest mother-daughter moments, and how they’re celebrating Mother’s Day!

We’d love to get to know you—introduce yourself!

Hello everyone! I'm Ying Shuen, current working full-time doing Emergency Planning and studying part-time Project Management (yes I know it's cray).

I absolutely love eating yummy food because the calories must be worth it and it's incredibly joyful to be able to find clothes that are like tailored for me. For one, the Mingzhu cheongsam is absolute love.

How did you discover YeoMama Batik?

I discovered YeoMama Batik when I was watching a documentary on a local channel and was really heartened to see the whole family being supportive of YeoLaoBan's venture born out of passion that comes with culture preservation.

I bought my first piece in 2022 but I've been ogling at the many pretty designs way before! For one, I regretted not getting a Candyland design.

Do you have an all-time favourite YeoMama Batik piece/print?

Wow, I have so many favourites it's so hard to choose. For now my favourite is the Firebloom!

The phoenix is majestic, love that the feathers are really detailed, the flora and fauna are in a great proportion (not overly cluttered) against the red backdrop which has sufficient space for appreciation. It's a work of art really.

Your bond with your mum is so special—how has it evolved over the years?

My mum was more authoritarian when I was a kid but we slowly evolved into open communications as I grew up. She is feisty, don't mess with her if you eat her share of laksa, really.

Being part of the baby boomer generation, she sacrificed her teenage years to work hard for the family so she's super resilient, hardworking and an effective self-taught bean counter.

How do you usually spend time with your mum?

We love to eat so when I'm free we will go out of the way to find yummy food or head to certain places that she bookmarked to visit, go shopping or we'll stay home while I cook.

I think we really bond through food so we will get each other food and talk about our day, everyday.

What are some of your favourite memories shared with your mum that feels especially meaningful?

So being a tamjiak kid (I still am btw), there was once my mum thought I couldn't finish my wanton noodles and she reached into my bowl to scoop out that umami morsel of wanton that I've been saving for the last. I shouted so loud that the row of seats stopped and stared at me. Must have been so embarrassing for my mum.

Our routine is... Eating and shopping for clothes.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day with your mum this year?

The plan is to bring the parents to some famous laksa place followed with traditional kuehs. The parents are huge fans of laksa and yummy kuehs!

If you could write your mum a heartfelt (or cheeky) love letter this Mother’s Day, what would it say?

Mama, even though I always complained that your caning is extra spicy and you are exceptionally fierce, it helped to ensure that I did not stray too much and helped to shape the person I am today.

You always say that there's so many different flavours while bringing me up, but that's the unique recipe that we share. There's probably more expectations that I have not met, but unfortunately, there's only me to love HAHA. Happy Mother's Day!
